Module 1.3: How to Prepare Training

For users interested in using these materials for training, we recommend the following approach:

Step 1: Review all Canvas content. Trainers will likely find modules’ content valuable for building their capacity, not just for training others. Trainers are encouraged to review all content closely before designing support for their local contexts. For example, many slides include presenter notes that provide rich opportunities for trainers’ own professional learning (hyperlinks to external sources, relevant passages from the California (CA) ELD Standards or The English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (ELA/ELD Framework).

Step 2: Determine training needs, audience prior knowledge, etc. Trainers will want to consider the immediate needs of those receiving the training. What are priority training areas, and what topics might be addressed later? What prior knowledge is audiences bringing to the training (e.g., about ELD standards, reclassification criteria, formative assessment, etc.), and what background knowledge is necessary before engaging in OPTEL-related conversations? How much time is allotted for the training, and what goals can reasonably be accomplished in that time. Slide decks are extensive: trainers should not assume decks can or should be presented in their entirety in a single training.

Step 3. Create the training. Modules present content, but trainers will need to make decisions about what content to present and how to present it. Some concepts and topics are addressed throughout modules; trainers may want to combine materials from different modules. Each slide deck lists objectives and agendas that are specific to those decks. If trainers combine slides from different decks, they will want to craft new opening slides to more accurately capture the content to be presented. Slide decks include interactive activities, but trainers may wish to revise them to better suit their audience. They may also want to add additional opportunities for participants to collaborate, discuss implications, plan next steps, etc.
