Module 1.2: How to Use These Materials

The information below will help you navigate these materials.

All Canvas modules are available now. All module content is published and accessible. Modules are numbered sequentially (1, 2, 3, 4), but this is for organizational purposes only. Users are not required to move through modules in this sequence or even visit all of them. The modules group content by topic, and their sequence does not imply a linear learning progression. Module 2 presents foundational information about the context and basic components of the OPTEL, but beyond that, modules group content by topic, not by degree of complexity.

Much of the content is conveyed through PowerPoint presentations. The primary purpose of this Canvas course is to provide trainers, systems leaders, and professional learning providers with tools to support others with OPTEL implementation. Since slide decks are a commonly used tool in training, critical content in each module is conveyed through slide decks.

Presentations are intended to be adapted and customized. All presentations were designed to be adapted by trainers for their contexts, audiences, and needs. Trainers will find some module content relevant and other content less relevant. Slide decks include interactive activities, but trainers are invited to tailor these and other elements. Modules are not necessarily intended to be used in isolation. A trainer might draw from content in multiple modules in a single training. Slide decks focus on specific topics, but decks vary in length, density of concepts, etc. Trainers might present content “out of order,” combine content from different modules in a single training, etc. Trainers will want to review slides through the lens of how much time they have allotted for their training and what can be addressed in that amount of time.

Content varies by audience. Users will find content relevant depending on their roles, contexts, and needs. The information below is intended to assist users in identifying what modules are likely most relevant to them:

  • Systems-level leaders will find Modules 2, 6, and 7 most relevant. Module 2 provides foundational information about the OPTEL and its components; Module 6 is designed for audiences looking for support for strategic, systemic OPTEL implementation; and Module 7 focuses on using the OPTEL in the context of parent consultations.
  • Instructional support providers will find Modules 3, 4, 5, and 8 most relevant. These modules provide a deep dive into what OPTEL implementation looks like at the classroom level.
  • All educators will find Module 8 important. It focuses on using OPTEL in inclusive classrooms with dually identified students (EL students with exceptional needs).
